NICU Technology

State-of-the-Art NICU

The 18-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Saint John's offers clinically advanced care by renowned specialists in a warm, supportive environment. The extra-large NICU bays are equipped with the latest technology, which means women can deliver a high-risk baby at Saint John's without having to be transferred elsewhere.

Giraffe OmniBed
Most advanced, user-friendly and developmentally supportive micro-environment for neonates. The Giraffe has:

  • "Lazy Susan" Rotating Mattress - Allows the clinician to rotate the bed 360 degrees for optimal patient access.
  •

  • Integrated X-Ray Tray - X-ray may be taken bedside, which minimizes disturbance for the tiniest of babies.
  •

  • Radiant Warmer - The bed contains a warming system that evenly heats the entire extra-large mattress.  The baby receives heat uniformly, regardless of his/her position on the bed.  An electronic monitor above the bed shows the mattress temperature to allow clinicians to adjust accordingly.
  •

  • Scale - In-bed scale allows for the baby's weight to be taken without removing the baby.  Additionally, the scale records the weight to allow clinicians to look at weight trends.
  •

  • Humidifier - Built-in humidifier provides humidity up to 95% so that baby's sensitive skin stays moist.
  •

Intellivue Monitor
Large color display shows baby's heart rate, respiration and oxygen levels. Touchscreen operation and customized viewing options improve the quality of care by providing clinicians more of the information they need right at the patient's bedside.

Phototherapy Light
State-of-the-art blue LED lights treat newborns with jaundice. Using the LED lights has proven to be the most effective means of breaking down bilirubin.

Ventilator/Vapotherm
In addition to a traditional ventilator, Saint John's specialty trained neonatal respiratory therapists also utilize a high-frequency ventilator designed for extremely low weight babies and Vapotherm - the newest in respiratory technology. Vapotherm improves quality of care by providing warmed, high flow and high humidity oxygen to infants requiring nasal tubes.

Medfusion Syringe Pump
State-of-the-art syringe pump allows drug libraries and dose limits to be built into the pump, which gives very specific options to choose from based on each patient and medication.  This enables increased protection against medical errors.
